Our Approach

Since 1889, we have actively advanced a culture of caring and a commitment to invest in the communities we serve worldwide.

This philosophy continues today through:

  • Progressive community lending efforts
  • Contributions to service and community organizations
  • Employee volunteerism
  • Gifts in-kind such as donations of meeting space, graphic design expertise and other knowledge services
  • Directorship guidance to charitable and civic boards
  • Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) Initiatives
The Northern Trust Company has “outstanding” Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) ratings.

Charitable Contributions
In the last decade, Northern Trust has contributed more than $120 million in support of non-profit and non-governmental organizations worldwide. The majority of funds have been directed to human service initiatives that provide critical services to low and moderate income families, such as housing, food, child care and health care. Specific details regarding contributions can be found in our Charitable Trust Annual Report.

Employee Volunteerism and Matching Gifts
Each year Northern Trust employees volunteer thousands of hours to local non-profit and non-governmental organizations. Northern Trust supports employee volunteerism by providing paid volunteer hours for employees to work with partner organizations during the work day. In addition, Northern Trust matches employee contributions as well as provides volunteer grants to qualifying organizations.

Our Children, Our Neighborhoods, Our Community
Northern Trust supports organizations working in three core areas: education, social welfare, and arts and culture.

We are committed to supporting education organizations that bring innovative, comprehensive and exemplary programs to students. Through our efforts to augment the priorities and goals of local education organizations, students in our global locations gain additional tools to strengthen their academic achievement and leadership development.

We support effective organizations working to measurably improve the quality of life in our focus communities. Health, basic human needs and community development programs provide invaluable support to people who face obstacles that impede their full participation in society.

And, we support organizations that bring opportunities to our communities, in order to create forums for social interaction that celebrate all of our diversity and heritage.
