Northern Trust Donates Nearly $14 Million in 2011
CHICAGO, February 14, 2012 —
Northern Trust (Nasdaq: NTRS) announced today that it awarded approximately $14 million in contributions to nonprofit organizations worldwide in 2011. The majority of funds were directed to social welfare initiatives that provide critical services to low and moderate income families, such as housing, food, education and health care. Additionally, Northern Trust employees contributed approximately 200,000 volunteer hours to nonprofit and non-governmental organizations across the globe.
"Northern Trust is committed to supporting and strengthening our communities through charitable contributions and volunteer programs around the world," Northern Trust Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Frederick H. Waddell said. "From our corporate contributions to our employee volunteerism, I'm proud we have been able to make a meaningful difference in the lives of people facing myriad challenges in 2011."
Organizations benefiting Northern Trust's 2011 support include:
- American Red Cross: Northern Trust's response to the 2011 earthquake in Japan included contributing more than $400,000 through the Northern Trust Disaster Relief Program, which included a corporate contribution to the relief efforts and an expanded employee matching gift program.
- The United Way of Metropolitan Chicago: Northern Trust's support of United Way chapters around the U.S. continued in 2011 with $3.1 million contributed to the United Way of Metropolitan Chicago. Of that total amount, Northern Trust's employees contributed $2 million.
- Sheila Kothavala Institute for the Deaf (SKID): SKID is the first school for underprivileged, hearing-impaired children in Bangalore, India. In 2011, Northern Trust continued its support of a teacher's salary, while employees in Bangalore participated in SKID's Children’s Day.
- Kids Company: Based in the U.K., Kids Company provides support to vulnerable inner-city children and young adults. In 2011, more than 60 Northern Trust employees in EMEA volunteered at the organization, and many participated in a project to renovate an underprivileged child's home. Northern Trust also contributed financially to Kids Company in 2011.
