We share information with companies that provide services to us — our check printing company is one example. These companies are not allowed to use this information to sell their products to you directly, and they are not allowed to sell this information to other companies. We also share information within our own family of companies, including our brokerage affiliate. We do this so we can better service your account and provide you with the quality you expect from Northern.
We also provide information to companies that have joint marketing agreements with Northern Trust. For example, we might share information with Northern Funds or the financial institution that provides and services credit cards with Northern Trust’s name on them.
Also, we are allowed to disclose information to credit bureaus and similar organizations, and to others as permitted by law. These disclosures might be in connection with a subpoena or other legal matter, an audit or examination, or the recording of deeds and mortgages in public records.
What information do you obtain through my use of Northern Trust’s web sites?
The primary information we collect online is the information you provide to us when you fill out forms, applications, or send an e-mail to us through our web sites. We also collect information indirectly by using cookies. A "cookie" is a small text file that is sent to your browser to allow us to identify communications from you. We use cookies to deliver content specific to your interests and to help us to optimize our site performance. If you do not wish for your browser to accept cookies from us, you may set your browser to refuse cookies, or to alert you when cookies are being sent. If you choose not to accept cookies, you will be able to view most areas of our web sites, however some parts may not function optimally.
How do you protect information I send to you through your web sites?
Our online security procedures include the use of Secure Socket Layer technology, which encrypts any information you may send to us. The information is unscrambled only after a secure connection has been made with our Internet server.
How can I reduce direct marketing from other companies?
If you want to reduce the amount of direct marketing you receive from companies other than Northern Trust or our affiliates, you can contact the following agencies (be sure to include complete information on each name, address, and telephone number you’d like excluded from these lists):
For materials received by mail:
For phone solicitations:
Telemarketing Do Not Call Registry
1-888-382-1222 (TTY 1-866-290-4236)
The National Do Not Call Registry gives you the choice to stop receiving most telemarketing calls at home. Registration is free and your registration will be effective for five years. Once your telephone number has been listed for a month, most telemarketing companies should stop calling you. You can register by calling toll-free 1-888-382-1222 (TTY 1-866-290-4236) or online at www.donotcall.gov. Charities, political organizations, and telephone surveyors may continue to call you. In addition, companies you do business with may also continue to call you.
Also, you can have your name taken off pre-approved credit solicitations (not just from Northern Trust) by writing to the following credit reporting bureaus or calling 1-888-5OPTOUT (1-888-567-8688). Be sure to include your name, address, Social Security number, and telephone number.
