Since joining Northern Trust in 1975, Mr. Waddell was named a Financial Services Officer in 1978, a Second Vice President in 1980, and a Vice President in 1983. He has had management responsibility in the Commercial Banking Business Unit for energy companies and large corporate business in the western United States as well as large corporations located in Chicago. Mr. Waddell became responsible for Strategic Planning and Corporate Marketing in September 1989, and was named a Senior Vice President in December 1989. In September 1991, he was named Executive Vice President for Northern Trust Bank of California with responsibility for the Los Angeles and Westwood offices as well as the investment management and real estate functions. Mr. Waddell had management responsibility for Northern's Wealth Management Group from October 1994 to March 2003. He was named an Executive Vice President in September 1997 and became head of Corporate and Institutional Services in March 2003. He was named President and Chief Operating Officer in February 2006 and was appointed Chief Executive Officer on January 1, 2008.

Mr. Waddell holds a B.A. degree from Dartmouth College and a M.B.A. degree from Northwestern University.

His charitable activities have included: President, Board of Directors, Ronald Knox Montessori School; Board of Directors, Wilmette Hockey Association; Board of Directors, National Conference of Christians and Jews; Trustee, Pasadena Historical Society; Board of Governors, Optimist Youth Homes; Board of Directors, San Marino National Little League; and President, Board of Governors, Kohl Children's Museum. He is currently Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Kohl Children’s Museum of Greater Chicago and serves on the Board of Trustees of The Art Institute of Chicago. He is a Board Member of the Executives' Club of Chicago and a member of the Financial Services Roundtable and the Commercial Club of Chicago.
