Community is a Core Value
Community is important in all aspects of Angie Maciel’s life, including her career at Northern Trust.
Angie joined Northern Trust eight years ago on the same start date that her mother, Silvia Maciel, joined Northern Trust in 1979. Within the first month, Angie became a member of the Latin Heritage Leadership Council (LHLC) employee led Business Resource Council (BRC), a meaningful community to her both personally and professionally. Today, Angie is the Vice President of the LHLC.
As a first generation Mexican American, Angie, a Team Leader in Client Valuation Reporting, feels a tremendous sense of pride in being Latino.
Her mom and dad, who immigrated for a better life and chased the American Dream, arrived when they were 12 and 14 years old respectively. As a child, Angie saw them build the first Latino grocery store centered around Chicago’s Brighton Park community while her mother worked full time at Northern Trust.
“Community is a core value, and we are intentional in giving back to our community,” Angie explained when talking about the LHLC. “We embrace the purposeful act of turning around and offering our hand to those behind us as the others in front of us did. We are so proud of the inclusive, accepting environment we have created and fostered—our version of familia.”
Angie credits her LHLC involvement with expanding her network and enhancing her soft and hard skills. For example, LHLC sponsored her membership into Mujeres de HACE, a leadership program that empowers high-potential Latinas to succeed professionally and thrive personally. “The LHLC has provided me with a sense of belonging and a space where my voice is heard and respected,” Angie said. “We make sure to cheer each other on and celebrate each other’s accomplishments while saying, échale ganas (give your all)!”

An Expanding Worldview
Angie and her family celebrate Latino culture and customs year-round. One favorite tradition is hosting a posada one night a year. Posadas take place in many Latin American countries on nine nights from December 16 to 24. For Dia de Los Muertos, they make an ofrenda (altar with pictures and knickknacks of their loved ones). They visit her parents’ hometowns in Mexico as often as their schedules allow.
Encountering different cities, food, and language are some of the ways that Angie’s family honor and explore culture. “We are so privileged to raise a bi-racial, bilingual son and we run towards experiences that honor both his Black and Mexican side year-round. We embrace all experiences that will expand his view of the world.”
Another fun tradition is posting a flag on their fridge of a different country and cooking a dish together from that country. “Currently, we are learning about Peru, and our special treat was to prepare and eat ceviche!”
Giving Back Fills Our Cup
Angie’s other passion is social justice and advocating for those who are marginalized, from supporting a donation drive for asylum-seeking families via Casa Norte, fellowshipping with the migrant families at the police stations, actively participating in the Personal Ministry committee to serving on the Associates Board of Chicago Children’s Advocacy Center (first responders to reports of child sexual abuse). “Our community and giving back are what fill our cup,” Angie shared.
