Our Defining Moments

The strength and stability we operate with today is borne from a long legacy of principled actions, deft decision-making, bold innovation and a commitment to always doing what’s right for our clients.

On August 12, 1889, Byron Laflin Smith opened The Northern Trust Company. Ever since, we have stayed true to those core principles.
