Aimee Moriarty - Defending our systems against cybersecurity threats and malicious activity

Aimee Moriarty has worked in Cybersecurity in the Financial Services sector for over 15 years and has held roles in digital forensics, threat hunting and incident response. In 2020, she became Northern Trust’s first Threat Hunter at the bank. The primary goal of both her work and her team’s work is threat hunting and that involves quickly detecting and defending against malicious activity that has the potential to evade security measures.

“Our leadership team invests in some of the best cybersecurity tools in the market, helping set our security team up for success in defending against advanced threats. I feel very fortunate to get to work with cutting-edge tech, however cybersecurity is not just about the technology we use. Having the best people who are trained to design, implement, manage, and fine-tune these tools, and are experts at interpreting and analyzing the data these tools generate, is an equally important component to an effective cybersecurity team.”

Ameya Girish Mahabaleshwarkar - From a summer internship to a software engineer role building  Gen AI solutions

Ameya Girish Mahabaleshwarkar is a software engineer fresh off campus, who works on Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) solutions for Northern Trust. After interning for Northern Trust’s Technology group, he re-joined Northern Trust on a full-time basis after graduation. His day-to-day life is filled with lot of learnings and exposure to new technology, including building GenAI solutions that are used by both internal teams and external partners.

“I was actually part of the Northern Trust pilot batch of summer interns. During my internship, I got a chance to work with Digital Asset Innovation Team. My work at that time around building blockchain-based applications. Between the freedom to explore new technologies and the valuable learnings I got from the wider team, I knew I wanted to circle back to Northern Trust. I then joined Northern Trust as a full-time employee after the successful completion of my software engineering degree.”

Prathima Kamalanathan - Life as a senior software engineering manager at Northern Trust

Prathima Kamalanathan compares her tech-focused role at Northern Trust to that of an orchestra conductor. Just as a conductor leads and coordinates various artists to deliver a masterful performance, the role of a software engineering manager it to pull together a team with varying skills to deliver a superior product.

“As a Senior Software Engineering Manager, my role involves overseeing a team of engineers and ensuring successful delivery of projects and initiatives. It requires a lot of cross-functional collaboration with other teams and providing technical leadership to my team. There is lots of planning to develop long term strategies and goals and aligning them with overall business objectives. Identifying potential risks and obstacles and developing mitigation plans for them is imperative for the role. In-short it’s a role of an Orchestra conductor, similar to how a conductor leads and co-ordinates artists, fine tuning elements to deliver a masterful performance.”

Kaela Finegan – Creating an artificial intelligence instance to support financial advisors

Kaela Finegan interned with Northern Trust in the summer of 2021 within our Hedge Fund Services team and then joined our Rotational Development Program upon her graduation. Her first rotation was in Asset Servicing on the Data Warehouse Solutions team, then she moved over to the Wealth Management business unit as a full stack software engineer for the Goals Driven Wealth Management team. Now she is on her final rotation with the Algorithmic Advice team creating an artificial intelligence (AI) instance for Northern Trust to support financial advisors, focusing more closely on the front end user interface (UI).

“I am most excited about the project I am working on currently with my team - the AI chatbot web application to support financial advisors - for several reasons. I was able to join the project at the onset so I feel familiar with the codebase and feel I am able to contribute a lot. There is also a lot of opportunities for me to have the freedom to make impactful decisions on the design of the project.”
