Affordable Housing
From supporting people experiencing homelessness to investing in affordable housing for vulnerable communities, we are working with partners to ensure everyone has access to safe and stable shelter.

Caritas
Caritas is dedicated to creating long-term, practical solutions for those suffering homelessness and social exclusion. Caritas has built a sustainable community where those needing safe shelter can find stability and take action towards rebuilding their lives. The Caritas Emergency Sleeping Pods offer a short-term resting place for adults who have nowhere to stay and two of them were purchased by Northern Trust in 2025. The pods provide a warm, private and secure place to sleep, as well as acting as a step towards wider support services, food, wellbeing and longer-term housing.
“The pods are the beginning of a new chapter in our efforts to support people without secure accommodation, an immediate shelter for those in urgent need. They are also the first step towards our longer-term vision of creating a community of modular homes, giving people the chance to rebuild their lives with stability and hope.”

Apla Ghar
Apla Ghar is a haven for the most vulnerable, regardless of age. offering orphaned children and senior citizens a place of safety, dignity and care. Apla Ghar, which means “our home” in Marathi, provides respite for 45 orphan and underprivileged boys and girls who live together in a caring, family-like environment. The orphanage ensures that every child receives nutritious food, safe shelter, clothing, healthcare and quality education at nearby schools. An old-age home on the same campus also creates a community for 10 senior citizens, ensuring every resident receives proper food, care and dignity in their later years.
“Thanks to the generous support of Northern Trust, we can provide food, care and hope to children at Apla Ghar and dignity and comfort to our senior citizens. Together, we are transforming lives.”

Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity transforms lives and communities by providing low-income families with the opportunity to build and then purchase an affordable home. One such was the Butros family from Cuba. When their young son was diagnosed with cancer, their plans were shelved as George Butros became the sole earner and his wife Zuleida dedicated herself to caring for their child as he underwent treatment. Through the Habitat program, around 75 Northern Trust employees participated in building them a new, permanent home in Miami. Now that their son has recovered, they are enjoying a new life there.
“Buying our own home felt impossible for many years and we almost stopped dreaming. Now it’s a reality, and our kids will have their own rooms, their own space and the stability and well-being we’ve been fighting for. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. None of this would be possible without Northern Trust.”

Covenant House Toronto
There are as many as 40,000 young adults experiencing homelessness every night in Canada. Covenant House is on the frontlines of this crisis, which can stem from family violence, mental health issues or affordable housing challenges. Last year their team cared for 2,000 young people, all looking for support, a hot meal, clean clothes and a safe place to rest. Convenant House has a trained team which is able to provide the on-site healthcare, counselling, education and employment services to help break the cycle of homelessness. With more young people staying for longer, donors like Northern Trust keep the doors open to those in need.

“Thank you to our partners, donors, volunteers and staff for your unwavering belief in what we do. By partnering with purpose, our impact is bigger than crisis response - it’s shaping a future where young people have the safety, support and stability to thrive.”
