Our Founding Principles - Service, Integrity, and Expertise
Since 1889, Northern Trust has been guided by our founding principles of service, expertise and integrity.
Our month of service, Achieving Greater Together (AGT), which happens every October, gives all of our employees the opportunity to focus on Service and to make a meaningful impact within the communities they work in and live in.

What does service mean to you?
Service is a way to help give back. I find a lot of fulfilment in being able to help people and animals in any way that I can, so being able to see the results of hard work and time put in to help better people’s lives and situations is what service means to me.

What does service mean to you?
Service is dedicating time, skills or resources without expecting anything in return. This is a great way to contribute to causes that people believe in. Meaningful service that is in line with values and beliefs can reduce stress and boost your mood.
Service is not only beneficial for society and the environment but also plays a crucial role in enhancing employee engagement within organizations.

Give freely of yourself, your time and expertise to make a positive impact to both individuals and communities at large.
Volunteering holds a special place in my heart and plays an integral role in shaping who I am.
I was born in Kenya and one of the sayings that rings true is “Tuko Pamoja,” meaning we are in this together. This embodies volunteering as gives me the opportunity to venture out of my comfort zone, whilst standing strong for the values I believe in.
What advice have you for people who are looking to get involved in volunteering work?
Make it fun and get involved with charities you are passionate about. Include family/friends. Volunteering does not have to be a huge time commitment – one hour goes a long way!

Business Unit: Wealth Management
Organizations you are involved with:
Compassion International – I am passionate about the mission of Compassion International to help end child poverty around the world. I have been partnering with this organization since 2017 when I began sponsoring a child in Ethiopia. In 2018, I began sponsoring a second child in Indonesia. We exchange letters throughout the year. In these letters, I get to learn about what they are doing in school or how their families are doing and I also get to share my life with them. I always aim to provide hope through the hard times and help them strengthen their faith. The two children I sponsor are now 16 and 17 years old and it has truly been wonderful witnessing their growth over the years.
What does service mean to you?
Service, to me, simply means serving others. I believe we were born to serve. We do this in all facets of our lives every single day: at home, at work. When it comes to charitable work or volunteering, this is when we go the extra mile for those we do not know with the goal of making an impact in the lives of those who need it most. When we truly live our lives serving others, we don’t focus on what we will get in return or how it will benefit us.
What advice have you for people who are looking to get involved in volunteering work?
Figure out what you are passionate about and seek opportunities to get involved/volunteer with organizations that align with your values. There are so many organizations to pick from but making sure you are passionate about the mission of the organizations you partner with will make it more enjoyable for you as you serve!

I tutor a middle school student weekly through Tutoring Chicago, which I’ve been doing since September 2023, prior to which I tutored through Working in the Schools. I also work with college students through One Million Degrees.
What does service mean to you?
For me, service stems from an awareness of my own privilege and a conviction to turn that into positive, others-oriented action. I’m encouraged by my belief that a lot of us, if we zoomed out a bit, would realize how feasible it is to incorporate meaningful service into our lives, whatever form it may take.
What advice have you for people who are looking to get involved in volunteering work?
Something that enabled me to volunteer year-round has been plugging into a service opportunity with a recurring schedule. I tutor weekly with Tutoring Chicago and quarterly with One Million Degrees – I’ve found that committing to something recurring (regardless of the specific cadence) helps ensure you’re serving your community without needing to coordinate new opportunities. I’d also encourage you to stay curious and open to new opportunities as they arise, whether that’s an opportunity a friend shares with you or a volunteer fair in your office.

Making an Impact
Corporate social responsibility and philanthropy are essential elements of our mission and culture. Driven by our strategic focus on diversity, equity and inclusion, community engagement and environmental sustainability, we strive to be socially accountable – to ourselves, our stakeholders, and the public.
Philanthropy is deeply rooted in Northern Trust’s history and is an essential element of our culture. Around the world, Northern Trust employees freely give of their time and talent to work for the greater good of their communities. To help empower these efforts, Northern Trust offers two paid days off to volunteer for charities of their choice, in addition to connecting employees with not-for-profit organizations that can benefit from their unique talent.
The result is more than 1 million volunteer hours in the last decade – and countless communities made stronger. See Northern Trust’s impact in our 2023 Sustainability Report here.
Achieving Greater Together 2023 Results
In 2023, Northern Trust employees set new records with 52,700+ hours of volunteering. For each hour volunteered, we donated 50 meals to organizations fighting hunger worldwide.
