Veera Sampath: APAC Head of Cash and Corporate Technology

Veera Sampath is the APAC Head of Cash and Corporate Technology at Northern Trust based in Pune. Both he and his 260-person strong team provide innovative technology solutions catering to end-to-end cash payments flow across all of our corporate functions and provide enterprise-wide engagement on providing quality corporate data and diverse analytics capability.

 

Describe your role at Northern Trust

As APAC Head of Cash and Corporate Technology, I take care of providing innovative technology solutions catering to end-to-end cash payments flow across all corporate functions (Finance, Treasury, HR, Risk and Compliance, Marketing and Technology) and provide enterprise-wide engagement on providing quality corporate data and diverse analytics capability.

I partner and collaborate with various business stakeholders to drive various strategic priorities.

In my role, I also spend a large amount of time mentoring and coaching my team.

 

Describe your team

We are a team of 260+ distributed across different units namely, Cash & Payments, Finance, HR, Marketing, Risk & Compliance, Enterprise Tech Tools, Enterprise Analytics, Corporate Data and Treasury.

 

What brought you to Northern Trust? Briefly describe your career path.

Previously, I was part of a Global Systematically Important Banks (GSIB) organization helping set up its Technology Global Capability Center from its infancy stage and helping that evolve into a matured delivery operating model.

When Northern Trust embarked on a similar journey a few years back, I saw that as an excellent opportunity to utilize my experience and in the process gain some new perspectives as every organization has its own nuances and cultural aspects.

 

What do you like best about working at Northern Trust?

The way people collaborate across different business units and across various geographical locations to take our strategic priorities forward.

 

What technology/technologies have you been excited to work with here at Northern Trust?

The technology group I manage has a diverse technology stack, ranging from legacy systems running for decades to modern application frameworks running on cloud. I have been excited to embark on various technology modernization efforts collaborating with our business stakeholders.

I'm also excited to learn about various possibilities that AI adoption could bring as a different outlook to problem solving and bring in operational efficiency.

 

What’s unique about Northern Trust’s culture that enables you to create, innovate, make an impact or lead effectively?

Its people centric approach from top to bottom!  All employees are called "partners", this goes a long way in embracing everyone in the organization and gives a sense of being given the same importance as our stakeholders and clients.

Though the organization has evolved and has seen the test of time, the core principles of Service, Expertise and Integrity hasn’t changed, and all partners embrace these daily.

 

How do you create a balance between work and home?

There is a conscious effort across the leadership to ensure our partners have a proper work-life balance. With the need to have connects and overlap time between the India and US time zones, weekday evenings are typically spent on work, but I ensure that most of the weekends I get to spend time with my family. The holiday and vacation policy we have encourages us to take a break, unwind and come back recharged.

  

Do you have any other career tips you would give to candidates interested in working for Northern Trust? Or general tips for career success?

Learning never stops, so keep upskilling and learning. Don’t have an "I know it all" attitude, embrace open-mindedness, you will be surprised by what you could learn from others.

 

Fast Facts

Hometown / where are you living now: I was born and brought up in Chennai, most of my life has been there. When I picked up this role, I made the wise decision of relocating to Pune with my family, which has now been my home for the past 3 years.

Do you have a pet(s)?: No pets at home, although my daughter would love to have one!

Favorite sports team: Multiple, Chennai Super Kings, Manchester United, New England Patriots (I love the NFL, and I have continued to follow even after 11 years on from my return from the US)

Best advice you’ve received (work or non-work related): If there is something that you feel you can act on and resolve, then take action. If not and it is not within your control, accept/adapt and move on.
