Stanis Thiruthuvadoss is the Chief Technology Officer for Northern Trust’s Asia Pacific region. He is the accountable Technology Executive in the region with HR oversight over 1300 full time technologists.
What unique viewpoints do you bring to your role?
I’ve lived and worked in four continents across multiple industries and organizations of various sizes. Along the way I've learnt different ways of working with key stakeholders, motivating partners, getting everyone engaged in a common goal, and delivering transformational capabilities.
I believe in transformation and not re-platforming and this helps challenge how we think of what needs to be delivered and doing so with increased value.
What are you most proud of in your career at Northern Trust so far?
I joined Northern as a manager with no direct reports and built up an amazing high performing team of over 450 employees and contractors, and expanded my scope from managing a financial data warehouse to a portfolio that included Finance, Treasury, Risk, Compliance, HR, Marketing, Enterprise Analytics, Enterprise Technology Tools and a few other capabilities.
I would like to think that I have also built a reputation as someone who will get Technology Projects done. An example of this would when I was asked to move to Luxembourg to complete the integration of a technology platform acquired a few years prior into a new data center.
The project was mired in challenges with significant penalties if not completed on schedule. The program was completed hitting every date set, with no significant issues at go live. This was a testament to the Technology Organization and its people who all rallied across the regions and various teams to ensure we were successful. Kudos to Tech!
How can we continue to foster a culture of inclusion at Northern Trust?
Personally, bringing in a partner from a different cultural background but more importantly who brought a different perspective to execution/delivery taught me to change my focus and accept a variety of viewpoints from a diverse group as the best way forward.
In addition, within the APAC region we hold a variety of events to bring the team together to participate, mingle and to see the social side of all of us.
Describe an unexpected outcome that helped make you a better leader.
Early on in leadership, I realized as a leader you need to be able to listen to the challenges faced by your team. It doesn’t meant that you can solve all of them but at the very least you should understand what they have to deal with to get the job done, and that then sets goals for you as a leader to help remove the roadblocks or find was to support them.
How does Northern Trust support your community engagement?
Northern Trust promotes year-round activities to give back to the communities with a focus in the month of October. Activities are organized across the globe in communities where we have offices.
And in addition, Northern offers two paid volunteer days a year for partners.
What advice would you give to other people exploring a career at Northern Trust?
Northern Trust stands out as a place that fosters internal career movement. Employees can easily apply for new internal opportunities across different business units and make career moves.
One can easily learn so many different aspects of Financial Services, Risk/Compliance, Controls, Technology and many more…all by looking for new job postings, networking and taking the plunge and applying.
