Transforming Sustainable Finance Through Tokenized Green Bond Reporting

How Northern Trust and the National University of Singapore (NUS) partnered to create a trusted, blockchain-enabled ESG reporting solution that enhances transparency, investor confidence and post-issuance asset servicing.

Client Background

The National University of Singapore (NUS) is Singapore’s flagship university and a leading global institution recognised for excellence in education, research and innovation. As a pioneer in sustainability, NUS has made significant investments in developing an environmentally sustainable campus while advancing research and industry collaboration in climate innovation and sustainable finance.

To finance these initiatives, NUS became the first university in Singapore to issue a green bond under its Green Finance Framework. The bond supports campus infrastructure projects that deliver measurable environmental outcomes, including improvements in energy efficiency, sustainable building developments and carbon emissions reduction. As part of its commitment to transparency and accountability, NUS provides investors with annual reporting on the allocation of proceeds and the environmental impact generated by these projects.

The Opportunity

As sustainable investing continues to grow, issuers and institutional investors face increasing expectations to provide timely, verifiable and transparent evidence of environmental impact. While green bonds have become an established financing instrument, the reporting supporting these instruments remains fragmented across multiple documents and systems, making it difficult for investors to efficiently monitor how proceeds are allocated and whether sustainability objectives are being achieved.

NUS sought a more efficient way to deliver trusted green bond reporting to investors. Beyond digitising existing reports, the objective was to demonstrate how tokenisation could create a trusted, tamper-evident source of ESG information that simplifies investor access while strengthening transparency, auditability and confidence in sustainable finance.

The Solution

Northern Trust partnered with NUS’s Office of Finance (OFN) and University Campus Infrastructure (UCI), together with United Overseas Bank (UOB) and the Singapore Blockchain Innovation Programme (SBIP), to design and implement the first in market green bond reporting solutions.

Built on Northern Trust’s digital assets platform, the solution tokenises green bond reporting data rather than the bond itself. Each reporting token securely represents verified sustainability information, including allocation of proceeds, environmental performance metrics, supporting documentation and annual green bond reports. This creates a single, trusted digital source of ESG information that can be accessed by authorised investors throughout the lifecycle of the bond.

The solution demonstrates how blockchain technology can extend beyond settlement and trading into post-issuance asset servicing. By applying tokenisation to ESG reporting, Northern Trust and NUS illustrated how distributed ledger technology can improve transparency, data integrity and investor servicing while preserving existing capital market structures. The collaboration also established a practical governance framework for validating, updating and distributing sustainability information in a secure and auditable manner.

The Results

The collaboration delivered a practical blueprint for how tokenisation can modernise post-issuance services for sustainable finance.

NUS now has a secure and transparent mechanism for distributing verified green bond reporting information to investors, reducing reliance on fragmented documentation while improving the accessibility and credibility of sustainability disclosures.

For investors, the platform provides a trusted, near real-time view of environmental outcomes associated with the green bond, including project progress, allocation of proceeds and supporting evidence. This strengthens confidence in ESG reporting and helps investors meet increasingly stringent sustainability reporting and stewardship requirements.

More broadly, the initiative demonstrated that tokenisation delivers value beyond financial transactions. By applying distributed ledger technology to ongoing asset servicing, Northern Trust established a scalable model for digital reporting that can be extended to other sustainable finance instruments, private markets and tokenised assets, reinforcing the role of tokenisation as an enabler of greater transparency, operational efficiency and investor trust across the asset lifecycle.

Client Feedback

“We are proud to have been part of this first-in-market green bond reporting tokenisation initiative in partnership with Northern Trust and UOB. The project marked a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to advancing green finance innovation. By creating a token that enhances the integrity and transparency of our environmental data, we sought to provide greater confidence to investors, helping them meet their sustainability reporting goals. This was an important step, as we continue to push boundaries in sustainable financial practices.”
