John Ferguson, CFA

Chief Investment Officer. Foundation & Institutional Advisors

John is the Chief Investment Officer for the Foundation & Institutional Advisors (FIA) practice of Northern Trust.  In this role, he leads a team of twenty-eight investment professionals located in Northern Trust offices across the country.  John and his team assist nonprofit clients with investment policy decisions, asset allocation, and investment vehicle selection. John is a member of the Investment Policy Committee that directs the strategic and tactical asset allocation of Northern Trust portfolios.  He has a strong global investment background and a deep understanding of equity investing. John’s service with Northern Trust began in 2009.

Before rejoining Northern Trust, John was a Principal and Lead Portfolio Manager of global strategies for Opus Capital Management. During his 29-year investment career, John has been an institutional trader, a fundamental analyst, and a fund manager. He developed factor and tax-based strategies as a member of Northern Trust’s Asset Management division.

John earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Miami University in Oxford, OH. John is a member of the CFA Society of Chicago and has been awarded the CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) designation.

In addition, John leads the healthcare strategy for the FIA practice and is a Board Member and Trustee for La Rabida Hospital. He became involved in Family Services in 2011 and fostered and adopted two girls since that time. He is an advocate for education, was elected to his local school board, and guest lectured at Marquette University on Sustainable Investing. John is a founding member of Block Alzheimer’s which raises money to support Alzheimer’s research. He volunteers and supports Child Link, and Little League Baseball
