Braven
Braven’s goal is to empower first-generation college students and those from underrepresented and low-income backgrounds, by giving them the skills, contacts and confidence needed to land strong first jobs. Braven believes the next generation of leaders will emerge from everywhere, so it helps students escape poverty and develop fulfilling careers in collaboration with education partners and employers. Northern Trust supports Braven with funding and year-round volunteering from employees who provide leadership coaching, interview skills and Board service from Kelly Mannard, Executive Vice President, Chief Marketing & Communications Officer. One winning outcome -- Jocelyn, a marketing junior, successfully used Braven’s interview preparation and skill-building resources to secure a competitive summer internship at a communications agency.

Circle Collective
Circle Collective supports young people facing many barriers to find permanent, life-changing work. It gives them the tools to achieve financial independence for the longer term as well as on-the-job experience to boost skills and self-belief. In the past year, its training assisted 67 young people, including two corporate insight sessions in which Northern Trust employees gave interactive workshops on presentation skills and career paths. Circle Collective also took part in a recruitment session at Northern Trust’s London office where varied teams described potential job opportunities. These live sessions with seasoned professionals are key to building young people’s confidence and set them on the path to success.

Chicago, United States
Project H.O.O.D.
Project H.O.O.D. (Helping Others Obtain Destiny) strives to break the cycle of poverty and violence in Woodlawn, one of Chicago’s most underserved communities. By providing resources, education and opportunities, the team helps individuals build confidence, gain skills and create a self-sufficient path ahead. One of its most impactful programs is a building apprenticeship which prepares students to enter a Department of Labor apprenticeship or find employment — all while earning a paycheck. The program provides meals, mentorship and academic tutoring, leading to high school graduation for all of those attending. It also provides free training from Associated Builders and Contractors of IL. In 2004, 150 students completed the program.
