Impact Report 2024

Healthcare

Healthcare is a basic need—for mind and body—and we work with organizations that provide support for the whole person.

Miami, United States

Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired

Miami Lighthouse is dedicated to helping blind and visually impaired people —children, adults, and seniors— to build skills, connect with others and find joy in life. Through education, research and vision enhancement Miami Lighthouse builds the essential confidence needed for independence, powered by supporters like Northern Trust. One example is the way it helps kids discover art and music at its specialist academy. Lorenzo, for instance, was enrolled at just two years old and given a specialized assessment that opened the door to accessing his curriculum visually. With the right support, he graduated second grade reading at grade level, which speaks to the life-changing impact of Miami Lighthouse.

Pune, India

Suhrud Mandal

Every year, 25,000 babies in India are born with hearing impairments, leading to huge learning, social and development challenges. Early intervention—hearing aids, language training and tailored education—can change their future and Suhrud Mandal in Pune has been dedicated to supporting such children since 1973. Four special schools for 450 students provide not just basic reading, writing and math but also sports, arts and vocational skills, helping pupils gain confidence and independence. Northern Trust’s support in the past year has allowed the schools to upgrade classrooms, add new computers and enhance training facilities. Funding has also provided essential equipment and meals, ensuring the continuity of the school.

Locations Throughout the United States

Youth Guidance

Youth Guidance has a presence in eight U.S. cities, offering counseling and teaching to equip young people with essential skills to navigate life’s difficulties. Working in coordination with the public school network, the weekly programs give youth a safe place to heal from trauma and build their mental resilience. Their two programs (Becoming a Man – BAM and Working on Womanhood – WOW) are run by trained counselors who teach critical values like integrity, accountability and the ability to express emotions like anger positively. Aileen Blake, Northern Trust Executive Vice President and Youth Guidance Chicago Board member, describes their work as “generational in scope and transformational in impact.” BAM and WOW Chicago currently have 9,582 students enrolled and the programs are running in more than 100 schools.

Seattle, United States

Virginia Mason Medical Center

Bailey-Boushay House, part of Virginia Mason Medical Center, provides loving, professional care for people with HIV/AIDS and support for those with chemical dependencies, mental health issues or homelessness. Its 50-bed emergency shelter is a place where they can get a healthy meal and take medication, as well as a warm, safe place to sleep. Backed by funding from donors like Northern Trust, the center also provides end-of-life care for people with other complex terminal conditions, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Huntington’s disease and cancer. Bailey-Boushay House cared for 560 patients in 2024, served more than 18,000 meals to clients (often the only meal many will have each day), and 90 clients transitioned into permanent housing, giving them stability and independence.
