Patty’s team and clients are located in North America (NA), Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) as well as across Asia Pacific (APAC). After college, Patty began working in her family business and after a few years found herself at Northern Trust and is now on the path to team lead. Her biggest takeaway for anyone considering a career at Northern Trust is to research our 130+ year history. Describe your role here at Northern Trust

I help ensure setups for OTC instruments are in our systems correctly, verifying trade details for multiple Fund Accounting clients. I also work with the pricing team to make sure assets are priced correctly. I also help train new team members and answer queries from various other teams on the work we do.

Describe your team at Northern Trust

My immediate team consists of our team lead and three analysts all located in Tempe, AZ. We also have team members located in Pune, India that work with us. In addition there is a co-team located in Dublin, Ireland. We have clients that are located in US, EMEA, and Australia region so having team members in different areas and time zones is key.

What brought you to Northern Trust?

I came to Northern Trust after working for multiple years in my family’s dry cleaners business after graduation. I started my “traditional” career later than the normal college graduate. Northern was a place that, being from Chicago, was very familiar to me and was also located in a great spot for me. The team members, when I interviewed with them, immediately made me feel like this would be a great fit. I was able to begin in an Analyst role and progress up to Consultant within 3 years. I am hoping to continue to learn new areas of the business by working with client onboarding and development teams to progress next to team lead.

What do you like best about working at Northern Trust?

I enjoy that Northern Trust gives a good work balance. They have good benefits and vacation policies. While I am one that actually does enjoy being in office I have come to appreciate the hybrid style we have settled into.

How has Northern Trust supported your career objectives / development?

Northern Trust has helped progress my career from entry level analyst to officer. I am “in charge” when my team lead is out and I am looking forward  to gaining more responsibilities and management opportunities.

How do you create a balance between work and home?

I have found having a balance between work and home rather easy to maintain due to Northern offering hybrid work which gives you more flexibility. We also have ample vacation and holiday days that keep me from burning out. Outside of work I go to the gym, play in a local dodgeball league, and enjoy wine tasting with my friends.

What would you say to someone considering a career at Northern Trust?

Northern Trust is a great company to work for; there are many offer opportunities for those looking to grow in their career. I have joined the mentor circles, there are also multiple employee led business resource councils to help develop your skills.

What advice would you give to employees beginning their career at Northern Trust?

Don’t be afraid to ask questions and to join the mentor circles that are offered quarterly. If you work hard and look for opportunities to take on more responsibilities you will be able to develop your career on a multitude of paths.

Do you have any other career tips you would give to candidates interested in working for Northern Trust?

Ask questions, ask for more responsibilities, learn from team members that are outside your team to expand your knowledge base.

If you are looking for a job at Northern Trust, I would recommend researching the company and its history. Knowing a company’s history can give insight into if it will be a good fit and what values are held at it. I would also recommend looking through all the different jobs available. Northern has many different roles and units of business and find the one that interests you the most.
